A proud Ktunaxa community in the Creston Valley, represented through the Ktunaxa Nation Council and guided by a vision of self-government and self-sufficiency in harmony with Ktunaxa traditions
Yaqan nuʔkiy: Lower Kootenay Band (Ktunaxa: Yaqan nuʔkiy) means “where the rock stands,” referring to an important place in the Creston Valley. Our people have lived here for over 10,000 years, and we have no finalized treaty. We are at Stage 5 of the BC treaty process, with the Ktunaxa Kinbasket Treaty Council negotiating for all four Ktunaxa bands.
Population: Our community has approximately 255 members, with about 110 living on reserve and others living on other lands or away from the community.
Location: Our main community is 4 kilometres south of Creston and just north of the U.S. border, on approximately 6,000 acres along the banks of the Kootenay River.
Culture: We are known for our sturgeon-nosed canoes, built for the reed-filled wetlands, and we host an annual Pow Wow on the May long weekend. Yaqan Nukiy School teaches Ktunaxa language and traditions, and our community enterprises include Legend Logos Gift Shop and Kootenay Lake tours.
